    They are either really great players or can't make more than a squeak. The trumpet parts that required this speciality were known by the term clarino and this in turn came to apply to the musicians themselves. I read somewhere (when I purchased my first metal clarinet in 2002) that metal clarinets were being manufactured due to a war with France which was where (if I recall correctly) wood was being imported from during that time period.
